Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 L'If gives up attractive notes of plum preserves and kirsch with touches of wild thyme, tilled soil, and cast-iron pan. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness, with a good amount of bright fruit and grainy tannins, finishing on a fragrant earth note.

The 2012 L'If has a finely-tuned, simple but focused bouquet with red cherries, raspberry coulis, marmalade and light minty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins on the entry, not deep or powerful, and there is some attenuation towards the bitter finish. I would broach this over the next three or four years. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Saint-Emilion

Saint-Émilion, a historic Bordeaux Right Bank appellation, is known for rich, robust red wines primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These wines feature deep colour, lush texture, and complex flavours of ripe plum, black cherry, blackberry, with hints of chocolate, licorice, and earth. They have smooth tannins and balanced acidity, making them both approachable and age-worthy. Top producers include Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Angélus, and Château Pavie, all renowned for their exceptional quality and diverse expressions of Saint-Émilion's bold character.
